8 Fun Ways to Learn a Language

Learning a new language can feel like a big challenge, but it doesn’t have to be boring or overwhelming. From my own experience learning English and Italian (and Spanish, but I won't mention it because my level is terrible), I’ve discovered that there are many fun and creative ways to immerse yourself in the process and actually enjoy it. If you're looking to spice up your language-learning routine, this guide offers some exciting tips to get you started!

1. Listen to Podcasts

Podcasts are an incredible resource for language learners. Whether they’re educational or just regular entertainment in your target language, they help you train your ear to the rhythm and flow of native speakers.

Interestingly, I didn't listen to podcasts when I was learning English in high school, but when I started Italian, it became a completely different experience. Italian podcasts were easier for me to follow, and I could pick up what they were saying much more easily. Start with short, slow-paced podcasts designed for learners and gradually move on to more advanced ones.

2. Read Kids’ Books

Children’s books are an excellent starting point for language learners. They use simple vocabulary and straightforward sentence structures, making them accessible even for beginners. The stories are often familiar, and fun illustrations help keep you engaged!

When I began reading in Italian, I started with The Three Little Pigs and Little Red Riding Hood. These simple stories helped me build confidence and learn basic vocabulary.

3. Study Music in Depth

Music truly is a universal language. Translate your favorite songs into your native language or find catchy tunes in your target language to sing along with. Studying lyrics helps with pronunciation, vocabulary, and cultural context—all while being enjoyable.

In Italian, I learned parts of the lyrics to Sara perché ti amo and even the beginning of the Italian National Anthem. Admittedly, the anthem is still tricky for me at times, but it’s a fun challenge that keeps me motivated!

4. Keep Notes of What You’ve Done

Documenting your progress is so important! Write down new vocabulary, grammar rules, or even reflections about what you’ve learned each day. Keeping notes helps reinforce what you’ve studied and shows you just how far you’ve come.

I found that having a notebook dedicated to language learning kept me organised and motivated. You can even write down translations of new phrases you hear throughout the day.

5. Play Video Games

If you’re a gamer, this is a great way to immerse yourself in a new language. Many games include voiceovers, subtitles, and dialogues that can teach you useful phrases while keeping you engaged in the story.

Although I’m not much of a gamer myself, I tried playing games in Italian for a while. It was a unique way to practice and learn conversational phrases, even if it wasn’t something I stuck with for long.

6. Try Laddering

Laddering is when you use one language you’ve already learned to study a new one. For example, if you’re (almost) fluent in English, you could use it to learn Italian. This method helps improve both your existing and target languages, while also giving you a fresh perspective on language learning.

I started learning Italian 3 years ago. Initially, I didn’t even know this method had a name! I begun studying Italian back in France, using English resources. It turned out to be an incredibly effective strategy for strengthening both languages at once.

7. Watch TV Shows and Films

Movies and TV shows are excellent tools for language immersion. You’ll get to hear natural conversations, slang, and cultural nuances. Start with subtitles in your native language, and as you improve, switch to subtitles in the target language or turn them off altogether.

8. Write Down Whatever You Want

One of the best ways to practice is by writing. Whether it's journaling, creative stories, or just doodling new words, writing helps solidify your knowledge. Don't worry about making mistakes; they're part of the process!

Thanks to prompts, I wrote a couple of things in Italian, however making every word fit in the sentence was hard business.

Final Thoughts

Language learning doesn’t have to be a monotonous grind. By incorporating these fun and engaging activities into your routine, you’ll find yourself more motivated and better equipped to tackle your goals. Remember, consistency and creativity are key! So, pick a method that excites you, and enjoy the journey.
